Hangin' Out with Dani Pettrey (Plus Giveaway)

Y'all forgive me now...I've been a bit MIA for the past few weeks.  I have a good reason, though.  Really.  :o)

Some of you may remember that I got laid off about 7 months ago only to find myself with a new job the very next day.  While the job itself was the same, there were several things I had to adjust to in a new office.  A couple of weeks ago, I knew I would have to start the process of finding a new job.  If you're like me, job hunting is one of the most exhausting things to do, and quite frankly, probably one of my least favorite things to do...period.  Then last Monday, my hours were cut from 35 to 20.  The job hunt was really on at that point.  After applying for oodles of job openings and sending up numerous prayers for help, I scored a new job in about 10 days.  Woohoo!!!  What it means is that my career in insurance has come to end (hopefully to never be revisited) and I'll be back in a dental office environment where I was before I got into insurance.  Seriously...I cannot wait!  I'm all kinds of giddy to be working about 8 minutes from my house, and with a full 40-hour work week.

So, I said all that to say....please forgive me for being absent!  I've missed interacting with you guys, especially through these interviews.  :o)  And what better way to get back on the bandwagon than with another debut author--Dani Pettrey!  Dani is a new author in the suspense genre, and her book is the next one in my TBR stack.  No joke...just looking at the cover of her book makes me shiver with that dark blue lake and snowy mountains in the distance (see below)!!!  I hope y'all love our fun chat today, and please be sure to sign up for the giveaway at the end!

Not including writing, what was your first job?

My very first job was babysitting. My first ‘official’ job was working at a country club/gym in their child care center.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Pride and Prejudice--both the Colin Firth version and the Keira Knightly one.

Ok, looks like we're gonna have to change this question to simply be "Which version of P&P is your favorite?" *grin*

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

To fly. I think that would be so amazing.

Be honest now, ‘cause we girls tend to exaggerate here...  How many shoes do you really have in your closet?

Sixteen pairs, though with my oldest daughter being a shoe thief, I usually only have about half of that amount in my closet at any given time.

Even though I have no kids, I consider myself fortunate that I never had a sister if only for not having to share my shoes.  :o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Have you ever met anyone famous? If so, who?

I’ve met a few: Larry King, Colin Raye, Amy Carter, and Henry Kissinger.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Made up stories. :)

Producers on American Idol would definitely give me cold, hard cash to go home. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Think Lucille Ball on I Love Lucy.

Katie Ganshert was born and raised in the Midwest, where she writes stories about finding faith and falling in love. When she’s not busy plotting her next novel, she enjoys watching movies with her husband, playing make-believe with her wild-child of a son, and chatting with her girlfriends over bagels. Not including writing, what was your first job?

My very first job was at Old Chicago. I was a hostess. It wasn’t the most fun job in the world. Rolling silverware can only be so exciting. My first real-life, adult job was teaching. I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and taught 5th grade for four wonderful years. Fifth graders rock.

You are a better woman than me.  I always knew teaching was *not* my calling.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Oooo! There are so many eighties movies I could watch over and over again. Like Goonies. Totally awesome. The Breakfast Club.  The Princess Bride. Weird Science. Or Little Monsters! Does anybody remember that one? Eighties movies rocked. But I guess if I could only pick one, I’d have to go with Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 version with Keira Knightley. I love me some Mr. Darcy.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I would be able to apparate like the witches and wizards on Harry Potter. Do you know how much time and money I could save? No more traffic jams. No more gas money or airfare. Plus, I could go anywhere. If I wanted to pop on over to Budapest for lunch, there would be no reason not to.

When all the book deadlines have been met, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Playing outside with my crazy little boy. He loves squirt guns. Cuddling up with my hubby and watching a great movie. Going to Panera with girlfriends and talking about life and God and books over bagels and tea. And of course—reading! There’s nothing like curling up in bed with chocolate and an excellent book.

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Oh, I totally go for the celebrity magazines—like Star and US Weekly. Basically, the ones that are probably only half true. If I see one of my favorite actors or actresses on the cover, I can’t resist.

Have you ever met anyone famous? If so, who?

I met one of the Baldwin brothers once. I can’t remember which one. He was at an Iowa wrestling meet of all places. I was a senior in high school. I didn’t even know who he was, but my friend was like, “Oh my goodness! That’s a Baldwin!” So I walked up the bleachers and introduced myself. That’s about as close to a famous person I’ve ever been.

Oh! But I sat courtside at a Chicago Bulls game once….back in the day when Michael Jordan was on the team. He stood so close to me that I could’ve pinched his butt. Of course, I never would do such a thing, even though I was totally obsessed with MJ in junior high.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Oh, goodness. I did all kinds of crazy shenanigans when I was younger. Typical silly stuff, like TP friends’ houses, ding-dong ditch, and make prank phone calls. Our favorite being: “I’m sorry to bother you, but your cats in our garden.” Then the person would inevitably say, “We don’t have a cat.” And we’d say, “We don’t have a garden!” And then we’d hang up and laugh like it was hilarious. Apparently, we were easily amused. One time we prank called this random lady and ended up talking to her until one in the morning. It was weird.

I recall some fun times like that with pranks.  Probably shouldn't recount them for my own safety...don't need to wonder if anyone will decide to take revenge!

You have the opportunity to choose between appearing on American Idol or Dancing with the Stars (and that’s without an audition). Which reality tv show beckons your participation?

Holy buckets! I would make an absolute fool out of myself on either one. I’m completely tone deaf and I have zero rhythm. I’d probably pick American Idol and I would sing the opening song to The Lion King. Nyaaaaa, Sven Ya, Va-va leeshy, va-va! I have no idea if those are the words, I just know I’m pretty good at belting them. If I made an appearance on Dancing with the Stars, I suppose I could try to bring back the running man. I’m not half bad at that one.

Pretty good Lion King rendition there, I'd say!  I'll alert the Broadway folks that there's theater talent in the Midwest!  :o)

Hangin' Out with Mindy Starns Clark and John Campbell Clark!

The opportunity to have more than one author interview per week comes around once in a blue moon here. That's why I'm so happy today to feature Mindy Starns Clark and her husband, John Campbell Clark! This is one of those interviews that I've been looking forward to for some time.  I've always been a fan of Mindy's books, especially her Amish mysteries. Having John here today with her...well, that's just a nice bonus, don'tcha think? :o)  Mindy and John recently collaborated on a book together, Echoes of Titanic, which was a fabulous mix of past history and present drama that had me glued to every single page.  I hope you'll join me today to hang out with Mindy and John with a quirky Q&A, and stay tuned to the very end for a special giveaway!

Not including writing, what was your first job?

Mindy: I was a travel agent. It didn't pay much, but the perks were incredible! I managed to see the world, and at huge discounts, thanks to being in the right business at the right time.

John: I was an accountant for the (now-defunct) shipping company US Lines.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Mindy: Stranger than Fiction. I watch it every time I finish writing a book, as my own little personal celebration.

John: I'd say the Bourne trilogy, though if I have to pick one, I guess I liked the first one best.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Mindy: Invisibility. I'd love to observe and listen in--which is sort of like what I'm doing as a writer anyway, I guess.

John: Flight! I've always wished I could fly!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Mindy: A big juicy steak. Yum!

John: Cheetos. So bad for you, but so good.

My hubby would pull up a plate with both of with those choices!  Maybe not necessarily together on the same plate, but you get the drift...  :o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Mindy: Great question! Anything from The New Yorker to People, depending on my mood. If they have Ladies Home Journal, I'll usually grab that just to read the "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" column. I love comparing what I would suggest with what the counselor tells them to do. :)

John: Anything financial, like Money or Kiplinger's.

If those answers don't convince anyone that opposites attract, I don't know what would!

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Mindy: Yes, as a travel agent, I usually flew first class and often ended up next to famous people. Let's see... Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Tommy Lee Jones, Richard Simmons, Motley Crue, Ned Beatty, Morley Safer, the New Jersey Nets, and a lot more I can't think of right now. :)

John: I met and chatted with Katherine Hepburn on the streets of NYC.

Both: Whenever we see a Broadway show, we wait at the stage door afterwards to get autographs and have met lots of famous people that way, like Daniel Radcliffe, Matthew Broderick, Al Pacino, Shaun and David Cassidy, Brooke Shields, Liza Minelli, and many more.

I can't help but smile after reading your combined answer!  My hubby has been a theatre/movie buff since I've known him, and he's an autograph hound, too.  He was fortunate during our dating years to work for a local Broadway theatre, and has met several actors/musicians/entertainers and gotten their autographs as well.  Being on the fringes in that type of environment has it's advantages at times!  :o)

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Mindy: Spilled bright purple nail polish on our brand new pale pastel green carpeting--my poor, sweet mom nearly went ballistic. She'd just had it installed the day before!

John: Threw snowballs at passersby. I still feel guilty about that!

Mindy, I can't help but cringe every time I read that!!  I bet you were grounded for a month!

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

Mindy: Anything from Bette Midler, because we have the same limited range. Something like The Wind Beneath my Wings, or The Rose, either of which is really easy to sing but still sounds halfway decent.

John: Something from Bruce Springsteen, maybe The River.

Not including writing, what was your first job?

I worked as a cashier at Winn-Dixie Supermarkets, and I always helped cashier at my father’s hardware store.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Kelly’s Heroes, which is an offbeat comedy/war film about a group of WWII soldiers who go AWOL to rob a bank behind enemy lines. The characters in that movie just crack me up, and one of my favorite lines is , “Think the bridge will be there, and it will be there.” (It’s much funnier in context in the movie.) I’ve actually found that quote applicable to quite a number of areas of my life!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I’d love to be able to transport myself from one place to another just by snapping my fingers. Come to think of it, there are a few people I’d like to be able to snap and send away...

But it would be wonderful to eliminate that whole plane, train, auto issue. That way I could spend more time with my children and grandgirls who are six hours away.

When all the book deadlines have been met, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Reading, watching all the episodes of Glee and Castle that my husband recorded for me and, generally, just knowing I don’t have to bond with my laptop.

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

People. Usually they’re months old, so I’m way behind on the latest gossip.

People seems to be the magazine of choice by you author gals.  :o)

Have you ever met anyone famous?

No, but I once stood three feet away from Billy Crystal at a Bacchus Mardi Gras ball. Do Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Disney World count?

Absolutely!  I met Bugs Bunny at Six Flags once, and always thought all those creatures qualified as a brush with celebrity!  :o)

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

I was such a nerd growing up; in fact, I’m still one…just older. One incident, though, I vividly remember is sticking my tongue out at my mother after she walked away from me. I didn’t know, though, that my father was standing off to the side. Let’s just say I never did that again.

LOL!  Sounds like something I might've done, too...and also, to be caught by my dad!

Having just visited New Orleans a few weeks ago, and since your latest book is set in New Orleans, I gotta ask... What is one thing you love about New Orleans?

One thing...oh, my...I love the unabashed, passionate, no holds barred, crazy energy we have when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds...and the food. I know, I know...that’s two, but I couldn’t answer that question without mentioning the food!

You have the opportunity to choose between appearing on American Idol or Dancing with the Stars. Which reality tv show beckons your participation?

Let me say, up front, there is a reason my mother didn’t name me Grace. It would be painfully apparent within seconds of stepping out on the dance floor. And that’s assuming I could even do that without tripping over an invisible thread on the ground.

American Idol would be the lesser of two humiliations, but I’m certain I’d be the female version of William Hung.

Hey, he had 15 minutes of fame.  Most of us don't even get that!

Nothing I want in immortalized in print.

Oh my...a bleach bottle?  I can't imagine how sick that must've made you!  (Makes my tummy hurt just thinking about it!)  You and my hubby have something (sorta) in common with this bottle trend....he had a problem as a child drinking soy sauce straight from the bottle.  He loves the stuff!  Thank heavens he shows a *little* bit more moderation now.  :o)

Dark, dark coffee with whole whipping cream.

Which magazine do you pick up when you're stuck in a waiting room?

I almost always bring my own reading material and a note pad. In a bind? A gardening magazine.

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Many, most in the world of science, education, and medicine.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Talking back. My parents were strict but tolerant, but some of my teachers were not amused.

You're next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

I don't think a Mozart, Handel, or Gilbert & Sullivan aria would win. Probably a piece from Phantom of the Opera or another musical. PS: I don't suffer stage fright.

I don't suffer from it, either, but there's no way I could pull off a Phantom song...talk about tough!  But oh, what a show to see in person!

Hangin' Out with Courtney Walsh!

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a debut author in Christian fiction--Courtney Walsh!  I've had a blast in the past few days getting to know this fun author through her blog, and it's FILLED with lots of pictures!  Makes sense since she's a scrapper...something I wish I could get motivated to do (both taking pictures and scrapping).  Anyway, I hope you have a great time getting to know Courtney a little better today, and stay tuned at the end for a little something extra.  :o)

Not including writing, what was your first job?

My very first job was at a place called "Dairy Supreme". It was like a mom and pop version of Dairy Queen in my little town. I still make a mean banana split!

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Oooohhh...I LOVE movies. And I have several that fit into this category, including The Bourne Trilogy, The First Wives Club, The Proposal and Enemy of the State. Oh and Pride and Prejudice! That one is swoony.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I think I would want to teleport. That way I could go to Italy without flying over the ocean. And that'd be a dream come true!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Ha. Pretty much every food I love I probably shouldn't! I REALLY love Chicago style deep dish pizza...and it probably has more calories than I should eat in a month, but it's SO GOOD!

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

People! I also read it on planes. I confess, I am completely into the whole Hollywood scene. I like E! News too. :)

Sounds like you and Julie Cantrell (last week's author) have People in common!  She swears I'm a correspondant for them...

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Yes! A few people, but my favorite is Al Pacino. When I was attending a summer theatre program in NYC, he was doing a show at the theatre where I studied. As students, we saw him every day and got to see a preview of his two-man show. The craziest part was when we were in a movement class making HUGE fools of ourselves and turned around and saw him watching at the door. He's quite intimidating!

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

My mom swears she doesn't remember this, but one time I set a fire in our back yard and blamed it on the neighbor kid. I got into HUGE trouble. My brother and I also had a big water fight in the bathroom using our Water Pics (did anyone else have those things?) We got in trouble but it was worth it...we got the whole bathroom sopping wet!

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

Well, since I am not a singer (who is married to a singer) I would say, I'd become one of the people who knew they were going to get on TV for being ridiculous and sing "Ice, Ice Baby" because I know all the words. Every. Single. One. (That's talent, right?)

Hey, that's better than "Pants on the Ground!"

Hangin' Out with Julie Cantrell!

I am so excited about today's author, mostly because she's a Southern gal like me.  :o)  Julie Cantrell has been lighting up the bestseller lists for her debut adult novel, Into the Free, most recently landing at #21 on the New York Times Bestseller List.  It is my honor to welcome this busy author to Southern Sassy Things today, and fair warning...you're gonna have a blast hangin' out with Julie!

Not including writing, what was your first job?

Like Millie in my novel Into the Free, I gathered pecans and sold them to my neighbors when I was very young. However, I donated all my money to my church mission fund. I had always dreamed of being a missionary and exploring the world. By the time I was ten years old, I started working at a snow cone stand. I’d ride the bus there after school and whip up rainbow-flavored treats until the tiny shop closed at night. I really can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have a job. You name it, I’ve probably done it.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Chocolat. Seriously, you could run that 24/7 for the rest of my life and my eyes would never tire of Johnny Depp. Yummy!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Easy. I’d want to control Johnny Depp. Hmmm….

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Chocolate. Notice a theme here?

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Oooh...I’m busted! You’ve unearthed my one guilty pleasure. I actually look forward to awkward medical/dental visits because it’s the only time I catch up on juicy articles from People. Of course, I hold it inside something that makes me look really intelligent like Architectural Digest. Admit it. You do that too.

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Well, I happen to live in a town with lots of famous authors including Ace Atkins, Tom Franklin, Sam Haskell, Neil White, and many more. My town, Oxford, MS, is a wonderfully unique place that boasts a culturally rich literary community, and it’s not rare to see John Grisham (who has a house here) or Morgan Freeman in local hot spots. The famous Manning football family lives here as well (yes, I do mean Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning!), and we have other claims to fame too. For example, when we moved here, I lived next door to Miss Mississippi and across the street from Miss South Carolina Ideal Girl, so I am kind of used to being the odd duck of the bunch with my frizzy hair and bare feet. But I guess my first real star struck moment of meeting someone famous other than my own neighbors was during a live Thacker Mountain Radio show when I was booked to follow the infamous Kinky Friedman. This guy is a master. He’s toured with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, you name it. And he’s hilarious. Then, there was me trying to stumble through my first live show. It was intimidating to say the least!

Well, when I get a hankerin' to see a celeb, I'll know where to come!  Good thing it's not too far of a drive for me.  

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Wow…you really want the dish, don’t you? Are you sure you don’t work for People? Hmm…well, I totaled my very first car. You can certainly say I got into trouble for that! That was a very big faux pas. I still feel guilty about that.

Ha!  Now, I can finally say "busted!"  Yep, I work for People.  It's my side job.  Gotta find out why my byline is not showing up in the mag...

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

First of all, God forgot I was supposed to be a rock star. I can’t carry a tune. At all. But it’s probably a blessing to the universe because my inner diva might just go wild. I guess if I ever made it to that iconic stage, I’d attempt one of my two favorite songs of all time. Either Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen or Imagine by John Lennon. Then, I’d be voted off immediately. But I’d sure live it up while it lasted. I’d flirt with Steven Tyler and give Randy a big hug because he’s from my home state of Louisiana. Then I’d ask Jennifer Lopez for all her beauty secrets and stand as close to her as possible hoping some of her lucky dust would rub off on me. I think she has enough to share, don’t you?

Surely she does.  *wink*
