Hangin' Out with Mindy Starns Clark and John Campbell Clark!

The opportunity to have more than one author interview per week comes around once in a blue moon here. That's why I'm so happy today to feature Mindy Starns Clark and her husband, John Campbell Clark! This is one of those interviews that I've been looking forward to for some time.  I've always been a fan of Mindy's books, especially her Amish mysteries. Having John here today with her...well, that's just a nice bonus, don'tcha think? :o)  Mindy and John recently collaborated on a book together, Echoes of Titanic, which was a fabulous mix of past history and present drama that had me glued to every single page.  I hope you'll join me today to hang out with Mindy and John with a quirky Q&A, and stay tuned to the very end for a special giveaway!

***

Not including writing, what was your first job?

Mindy: I was a travel agent. It didn't pay much, but the perks were incredible! I managed to see the world, and at huge discounts, thanks to being in the right business at the right time.

John: I was an accountant for the (now-defunct) shipping company US Lines.

Courtesy of Wikipedia
What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Mindy: Stranger than Fiction. I watch it every time I finish writing a book, as my own little personal celebration.

John: I'd say the Bourne trilogy, though if I have to pick one, I guess I liked the first one best.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Mindy: Invisibility. I'd love to observe and listen in--which is sort of like what I'm doing as a writer anyway, I guess.

John: Flight! I've always wished I could fly!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Mindy: A big juicy steak. Yum!

John: Cheetos. So bad for you, but so good.

My hubby would pull up a plate with both of with those choices!  Maybe not necessarily together on the same plate, but you get the drift...  :o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Mindy: Great question! Anything from The New Yorker to People, depending on my mood. If they have Ladies Home Journal, I'll usually grab that just to read the "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" column. I love comparing what I would suggest with what the counselor tells them to do. :)

John: Anything financial, like Money or Kiplinger's.

If those answers don't convince anyone that opposites attract, I don't know what would!

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Mindy: Yes, as a travel agent, I usually flew first class and often ended up next to famous people. Let's see... Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Tommy Lee Jones, Richard Simmons, Motley Crue, Ned Beatty, Morley Safer, the New Jersey Nets, and a lot more I can't think of right now. :)

John: I met and chatted with Katherine Hepburn on the streets of NYC.

Courtesy of nyctourist.com
Both: Whenever we see a Broadway show, we wait at the stage door afterwards to get autographs and have met lots of famous people that way, like Daniel Radcliffe, Matthew Broderick, Al Pacino, Shaun and David Cassidy, Brooke Shields, Liza Minelli, and many more.

I can't help but smile after reading your combined answer!  My hubby has been a theatre/movie buff since I've known him, and he's an autograph hound, too.  He was fortunate during our dating years to work for a local Broadway theatre, and has met several actors/musicians/entertainers and gotten their autographs as well.  Being on the fringes in that type of environment has it's advantages at times!  :o)

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Mindy: Spilled bright purple nail polish on our brand new pale pastel green carpeting--my poor, sweet mom nearly went ballistic. She'd just had it installed the day before!

John: Threw snowballs at passersby. I still feel guilty about that!

Mindy, I can't help but cringe every time I read that!!  I bet you were grounded for a month!

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

Mindy: Anything from Bette Midler, because we have the same limited range. Something like The Wind Beneath my Wings, or The Rose, either of which is really easy to sing but still sounds halfway decent.

John: Something from Bruce Springsteen, maybe The River.

***

Well, if no one else had a great time today, I know I sure did!  It's so fun when I find authors that I (or hubby) have things in common with.  :o)  And if you'd like to get to know Mindy a little bit better, feel free to visit her website here.

And I told you there was an extra special surprise, right?  In honor of the fact that we have not one, but two authors with us today, we're giving away not one, but TWO books!  :o)  Yep, there are two copies up for grabs of Mindy and John's latest book, Echoes of Titanic.  Believe me, you do NOT want to miss out on your chance to read this book!  I read it a couple of weeks ago, and WOW...what a fantastic read!  So, here's the dealio...

1.  Gotta be a US resident.

2.  Gotta leave a comment in the comment section below with your email address like so (yourname at provider dot com) or similar.

3.  Gotta leave that comment before Sunday, April 29th, 11:59 CST.

4.  Want an extra entry?  Be a follower of my blog through Google Friend Connect or Networked Blogs, or through email subscription.  Be sure to let me know in your comment, too.

Good luck everyone, and thanks for stopping by!

Time has not been my friend today!  I meant to have this posted oh...around lunchtime, and now's, it's a whole 8 hours later.  I hope some of y'all are night owls like me, and are looking here, there, and yon to read an interview tonight with an up and coming author.  What?  You're not?  Well, you oughta be!!!  *wink*

I've not had the privilege yet of reading Nancy's debut novel, The Irish Healer, but it is patiently waiting for me on my Kindle.  Until then, I'm so happy that she stopped by for all us bookies to get to know her better.

Welcome, Nancy!

Boy, it's a toss up between The Philadelphia Story and A Christmas Story. ;-)

Cheese danish

Oh, I want one right this minute.  Who needs to wait until breakfast to eat one?!  :o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Any travel magazines

I met George Clooney in high school when he took a friend to the prom.

Quite possibly the coolest celeb anyone has ever met in all the Hangin' Out interviews so far!  You're in tall cotton, girl!

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Honestly, nothing.

I don't believe it.  Nope...sure don't.  :o)

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

Anything by Barbra Streisand (I'm showing my age!)

Hangin' Out with Kelly Irvin!

I am so happy to bring you another great Amish author this week--Kelly Irvin.  Kelly is no stranger to writing books, but she recently stepped into the realm of Amish fiction with her latest novel, To Love and To Cherish.  I hope you all will love getting to know Kelly a little better today!  :o)

***

Not including writing, what was your first job?

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I'd like to fly--so I can escape rush hour traffic!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn't?

Currently I'm obsessed with tater tots.

Oh, you make me want to eat a whole basket full of 'em right now!  Mmmm...good!

Reader's Digest

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Jazz musicians belonging to the group Spyro Gyra

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

I once drank a bottle of Aunt Jemima maple syrup when my mom wasn't looking. I also drank from a bleach bottle. I don't know if that was a trend, or what.

Oh my...a bleach bottle?  I can't imagine how sick that must've made you!  (Makes my tummy hurt just thinking about it!)  You and my hubby have something (sorta) in common with this bottle trend....he had a problem as a child drinking soy sauce straight from the bottle.  He loves the stuff!  Thank heavens he shows a *little* bit more moderation now.  :o)

You're next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

"I Can Only Imagine"

Kelly, thank you so much for being my guest today!  I always love to meet new Amish fiction authors.  :o)

Hangin' Out with Kate Lloyd!

Thanks so much for joining me today to meet another fabulous Christian author--Kate Lloyd!

I confess that I initially thought Kate was a debut author because I've seen her latest book, Leaving Lancaster, featured several places online.  But it wasn't until I visited her website that I discovered Leaving Lancaster is her second novel.  Oh, well...didn't make me any less eager to get to know her better!  :o)

Hope y'all enjoy our chat today!

***

Not including writing, what was your first job?

Working in a fabric store, then managing a craft & gift store.

Oh, I'm so jealous!  It has always been a wishful dream of mine to own and operate one.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Gone with the Wind!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Filing my stacks of papers and notes ... Make that organizing my whole house!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn't?

Dark, dark coffee with whole whipping cream.

Which magazine do you pick up when you're stuck in a waiting room?

I almost always bring my own reading material and a note pad. In a bind? A gardening magazine.

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Many, most in the world of science, education, and medicine.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Talking back. My parents were strict but tolerant, but some of my teachers were not amused.

You're next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

I don't think a Mozart, Handel, or Gilbert & Sullivan aria would win. Probably a piece from Phantom of the Opera or another musical. PS: I don't suffer stage fright.

I don't suffer from it, either, but there's no way I could pull off a Phantom song...talk about tough!  But oh, what a show to see in person!

***

Kate, it sounds like you and I would never run out of things to talk about in a conversation...there are so many things we have in common!  (Except the coffee....this gal is a tea drinker all the way.)  Thanks so much for taking the time to let us get to know you better.  :o)

Folks, if you'd like to connect with Kate online, visit her website or connect with her on Facebook.

And as always, there's a book up for grabs this week!  If you'd like the chance to win a copy of Kate's new book, Leaving Lancaster, simply fill out the form below in it's entirety before Tuesday, 3/27, 11:59PM CST, to be entered to win.  Giveaway is limited to US residents only, and void where prohibited.  Odds of winning are based upon number of entrants.

Good luck, and see y'all next week with another fabulous author!

Hangin' Out with Courtney Walsh!

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a debut author in Christian fiction--Courtney Walsh!  I've had a blast in the past few days getting to know this fun author through her blog, and it's FILLED with lots of pictures!  Makes sense since she's a scrapper...something I wish I could get motivated to do (both taking pictures and scrapping).  Anyway, I hope you have a great time getting to know Courtney a little better today, and stay tuned at the end for a little something extra.  :o)

Welcome, Courtney!

***
Not including writing, what was your first job?

My very first job was at a place called "Dairy Supreme". It was like a mom and pop version of Dairy Queen in my little town. I still make a mean banana split!

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Oooohhh...I LOVE movies. And I have several that fit into this category, including The Bourne Trilogy, The First Wives Club, The Proposal and Enemy of the State. Oh and Pride and Prejudice! That one is swoony.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I think I would want to teleport. That way I could go to Italy without flying over the ocean. And that'd be a dream come true!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Ha. Pretty much every food I love I probably shouldn't! I REALLY love Chicago style deep dish pizza...and it probably has more calories than I should eat in a month, but it's SO GOOD!

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

People! I also read it on planes. I confess, I am completely into the whole Hollywood scene. I like E! News too. :)

Sounds like you and Julie Cantrell (last week's author) have People in common!  She swears I'm a correspondant for them...

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Yes! A few people, but my favorite is Al Pacino. When I was attending a summer theatre program in NYC, he was doing a show at the theatre where I studied. As students, we saw him every day and got to see a preview of his two-man show. The craziest part was when we were in a movement class making HUGE fools of ourselves and turned around and saw him watching at the door. He's quite intimidating!

I see what you mean!

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

My mom swears she doesn't remember this, but one time I set a fire in our back yard and blamed it on the neighbor kid. I got into HUGE trouble. My brother and I also had a big water fight in the bathroom using our Water Pics (did anyone else have those things?) We got in trouble but it was worth it...we got the whole bathroom sopping wet!

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

Well, since I am not a singer (who is married to a singer) I would say, I'd become one of the people who knew they were going to get on TV for being ridiculous and sing "Ice, Ice Baby" because I know all the words. Every. Single. One. (That's talent, right?)

Hey, that's better than "Pants on the Ground!"

***

Courtney, thanks so much for being my special guest today!  I hope you'll come back for another visit soon.  :o)

Folks, if you'd like to connect with Courtney online, feel free to visit her blog (listed above), or find her on Twitter.

And now, for that little something extra...

Wouldn't you love to read Courtney's debut novel?  It's real simple...really.  Just complete the form below with your full name, mailing addy, and email addy, and your name will be entered to win a copy!  Be sure to complete your entry before Tuesday, March 20th, 11:59 CST, if you want it to count.  :o)  Giveaway is limited to US residents only, and void where prohibited.  Odds of winning are based upon number of entrants.

Good luck, and see y'all next week with another fabulous author!

**Thanks to Jeane from Wynn-Wynn Media for coordinating today's interview. :o)

Hangin' Out with Julie Cantrell!

I am so excited about today's author, mostly because she's a Southern gal like me.  :o)  Julie Cantrell has been lighting up the bestseller lists for her debut adult novel, Into the Free, most recently landing at #21 on the New York Times Bestseller List.  It is my honor to welcome this busy author to Southern Sassy Things today, and fair warning...you're gonna have a blast hangin' out with Julie!

***

Not including writing, what was your first job?

Like Millie in my novel Into the Free, I gathered pecans and sold them to my neighbors when I was very young. However, I donated all my money to my church mission fund. I had always dreamed of being a missionary and exploring the world. By the time I was ten years old, I started working at a snow cone stand. I’d ride the bus there after school and whip up rainbow-flavored treats until the tiny shop closed at night. I really can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t have a job. You name it, I’ve probably done it.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

Chocolat. Seriously, you could run that 24/7 for the rest of my life and my eyes would never tire of Johnny Depp. Yummy!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

Easy. I’d want to control Johnny Depp. Hmmm….

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Chocolate. Notice a theme here?

I do...scary.  ;o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Oooh...I’m busted! You’ve unearthed my one guilty pleasure. I actually look forward to awkward medical/dental visits because it’s the only time I catch up on juicy articles from People. Of course, I hold it inside something that makes me look really intelligent like Architectural Digest. Admit it. You do that too.

Ah, you almost busted me...except I've given up on lookin' intelligent!

Have you ever met anyone famous?

Well, I happen to live in a town with lots of famous authors including Ace Atkins, Tom Franklin, Sam Haskell, Neil White, and many more. My town, Oxford, MS, is a wonderfully unique place that boasts a culturally rich literary community, and it’s not rare to see John Grisham (who has a house here) or Morgan Freeman in local hot spots. The famous Manning football family lives here as well (yes, I do mean Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning!), and we have other claims to fame too. For example, when we moved here, I lived next door to Miss Mississippi and across the street from Miss South Carolina Ideal Girl, so I am kind of used to being the odd duck of the bunch with my frizzy hair and bare feet. But I guess my first real star struck moment of meeting someone famous other than my own neighbors was during a live Thacker Mountain Radio show when I was booked to follow the infamous Kinky Friedman. This guy is a master. He’s toured with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, you name it. And he’s hilarious. Then, there was me trying to stumble through my first live show. It was intimidating to say the least!

Well, when I get a hankerin' to see a celeb, I'll know where to come!  Good thing it's not too far of a drive for me.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

Wow…you really want the dish, don’t you? Are you sure you don’t work for People? Hmm…well, I totaled my very first car. You can certainly say I got into trouble for that! That was a very big faux pas. I still feel guilty about that.

Ha!  Now, I can finally say "busted!"  Yep, I work for People.  It's my side job.  Gotta find out why my byline is not showing up in the mag...

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

First of all, God forgot I was supposed to be a rock star. I can’t carry a tune. At all. But it’s probably a blessing to the universe because my inner diva might just go wild. I guess if I ever made it to that iconic stage, I’d attempt one of my two favorite songs of all time. Either Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen or Imagine by John Lennon. Then, I’d be voted off immediately. But I’d sure live it up while it lasted. I’d flirt with Steven Tyler and give Randy a big hug because he’s from my home state of Louisiana. Then I’d ask Jennifer Lopez for all her beauty secrets and stand as close to her as possible hoping some of her lucky dust would rub off on me. I think she has enough to share, don’t you?

Surely she does.  *wink*

Julie, thank you SO much for stoppin' by today, and giving readers the opportunity to get to know you better!  I hope you'll come back for another visit soon.  :o)

Hangin' Out with Ginny Yttrup!

I have really missed interviewing authors in the last few months, and am so happy to be back in the swing of things with today's featured author, Ginny Yttrup. Ginny is the author of two books published by B&H Publishers--Words and Lost and Found, the latter being released just a few days ago. I hope you enjoy our fun interview today, and that you'll have a great time "hangin' out" with Ginny!

***

Not including writing, what was your first job?

I got my first official job when I was 15 years old. I worked at Baskin Robins Ice Cream scooping ice cream. There I developed an obsession for ice cream that’s never left me.

What is one movie that you could watch over and over again?

The Sound of Music. I’m sure I’ve seen it at least a hundred times. Love, love, love it!

We have a common bond with that movie!  When I was a girl, I would watch it over and over again, sometimes twice a day.  I used to imagine that I was Liesl, and couldn't wait for the day that I would actually be "sixteen going on seventeen!"

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?

I’d like to be invisible, which is the title of the next book I’m working on. I’d love to observe things without being seen—or to help someone without them knowing who’d helped them. I can see all kinds of advantages to invisibility! Plus, I’d never have to do my hair or makeup or think about what I’m going to wear!

What food do you love, even though you know you shouldn’t?

Ice cream, pizza, filet mignon—rare, baked potato with lots of butter and sour cream. That’s just a partial list. I’m a foodie, however, in the last two months I’ve given up sugar and have eaten only foods considered vegan. I’m dealing with some health issues and felt God leading me to make some changes in my diet. So, needless to say, I haven’t eaten any of the foods on the above list for a while.

I've come very close once or twice to giving up sugar, but it is sooooo hard!  Gotta have my sweet tea now!  :o)

Which magazine do you pick up when you’re stuck in a waiting room?

Tabloid stuff or People Magazine. Embarrassing, but true!

Have you ever met anyone famous?

I met Arnold Schwarzenegger about 15 years ago—long before he was California’s Governor. I was surprised that he was much shorter than I’d imagined.

What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

The only time I remember being in trouble was when I was a senior in high school. I was 17 and dating the guy I eventually married. I had a very strict stepfather that year who had set a 10:00 p.m. curfew for me. On a Sunday night, my boyfriend and I were driving home from my grandparent’s house and I got home 5 minutes late. My stepfather grounded me for the entire week. Sadly, it was the week of graduation. I was allowed to walk in my graduation ceremony but couldn’t attend any other festivities. I felt that injustice for so long until I realized that I deserved to be in trouble a lot more often for much worse infractions, but I never got caught!

You’re next in line to audition for American Idol. What song do you sing for the judges?

First, that would never happen—I would never audition because I can’t sing a note on key to save my life. But, in the world of fantasy, I would definitely sing Amazing Grace because that is the story of my life.

***

Ginny, thanks so much for stoppin' by today, and also, thanks to our mutual connection, Jeane Wynn from WynnWynn Media, for making it all happen.  :o)  I hope you'll come back to visit again soon!

Friends, if you'd like to get more info on Ginny and her books, visit her website to sign up for her newsletter or find her on Facebook.

And one more fun tidbit...  You have the opportunity to win a copy of Ginny's newest book, Lost and Found!  If you'd like to have your name entered in the drawing, please fill out the form below as requested.  US addresses only, and all entries must be received by 11:59pm Tuesday, March 6.

Heartbreaking, Yet Enthralling - His Steadfast Love by Golden Keyes Parsons/4 Stars

Golden Keyes Parsons' latest historical tale set during the Civil War is as much enthralling as it is heartbreaking. From the gruesome battlefields to the spacious plantations, life is sure to never be the same again as brother is pitted against brother and masters against their slaves. The harsh backdrop of war is difficult to read, but necessary to understand the difficulties facing a Northern officer, a Southern lady, and a courtship between them.

Fans of Civil War era fiction may not enjoy this particular story, considering 5 years of history are condensed into one novel. However, the love story is one that fans of historical romance are sure to savor.

4 Stars

Southern?  Yes
Sass?  No

Summary of His Steadfast Love:

It isn't until the Civil War comes to her doorstep that Amanda Bell must choose between love and family.

It's the spring of 1861 on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Amanda never thought she would marry because of a promise she made to her dying mother, but her attraction to Captain Kent Littlefield is undeniable.

When Texas secedes from the Union, her brother Daniel aligns with the Confederate States, while Kent remains with the Union troops.

Her heart is torn between the two men she is closest to and the two sides of the conflict. Amanda prays to God for direction and support, but hears only silence. Where is God in the atrocities of war-and whose side is He on?

Unique Amish Fiction That's Guaranteed to Please - Along Wooded Paths by Tricia Goyer

Until I got my hands on the two novels currently in the Big Sky Series by Tricia Goyer, I'll confess...I wasn't a huge fan of her work.  Now, before you go bashing me on the head because I've lost my marbles, let me be clear.  She's a good author, but up until a week ago, her books didn't have that "zing" or "snap-crackle-pop" that I love to experience when reading.  And now....we've got a "snap-crackle-pop," a "zippa-de-do-dah," and a "wowza!" all rolled together thanks to her latest offering--Along Wooded Paths--the second book in the Big Sky Series.

I love Amish stories that take me beyond the borders of Pennsylvania, Ohio, or Indiana (where most Amish stories are set).  This series just happens to take place in Montana, and thanks to the majestic mountains and the small-town folk, the little town of Kootenai is almost a character by itself.  Everyone loves to stop by the little store where Marianna works so they can get a good meal, maybe a slice of cake, and some good conversation.  You may even find Ben there once in awhile, participating in an open mic night of sorts.  But what sets this one little place apart from all the other Amish communities is the ordinary interaction between the Englisch and the Amish.  In most Amish novels, the Englisch are pictured in one of three ways:  as a mode of transportation, as a trusted doctor that they visit regularly, or as a temptation to some young boy or girl during their rumshpringa.  But when your car is stuck on the side of the road, or when your cabinets are void of food...everyone helps each other.  That quality alone makes this series different from any other Amish series I've ever read, and ya know...I'd love to see a whole lot more of 'em.

If all that wasn't enough to really make Tricia's Amish novels unique, she's got one more little trick up her sleeve--their interaction with God.  Now, if you're a regular to Amish books, you know that they are pretty much "by the book" when it comes to matters of church, faith, and their Ordnung.  Just like every other facet of their lives, there is a system and order to things that has been there for hundreds of years.  While I understand most of it (although I couldn't ever physically do it all), I've always wondered about the religious side of things.  Why don't they believe in reading the Bible on their own?  Why do they almost blindly trust every word from their bishop's mouth?  Why do they believe in praying silently versus praying aloud?  Do they believe that they're the only chosen group going to heaven?  What about outsiders that say they're Christians, too?  In Along Wooded Paths, Marianna has many of those same questions, too, and I'm on pins and needles waiting to find out how she comes to terms with her new relationship with God, and how it's so special to her.

And good grief, you'll smack me upside the head for sure if I don't give you the best morsel of all!  Yep....there's a love triangle, too!  And sweet mercy, it's a good 'un...one of the very best I've read in a long time.  :o)  Now, Marianna hasn't sided with the right guy yet, in my opinion, but I'm still hoping for things to work out the way they're supposed to...there's still hope.  I just don't think she's truly happy with her decision at this point.  (Oh, and there's not one triangle, but two...geez, could this book get any better?!)

Not since book 3 of Cindy Woodsmall's first Amish series have I been so impatient to read the last book in a series!  How many days 'til April 1, 2012, Tricia...because I promise, I'm countin' them down!

Summary for Along Wooded Paths:

All she wanted was a simple Amish life . . . But now Marianna Sommer finds herself depending on Englisch neighbors. Although proud of living apart from the world, she and her newly relocated Amish family have discovered that life in the remote mountains of Montana requires working together.

As Marianna begins helping those different from herself—and receiving their help—her heart contemplates two directions. She’s torn between the Amish man from Indiana whom she has long planned on marrying and the friendly Englischer who models a closer walk with God than she’s ever seen before.

Who should have young Marianna’s heart? What is God asking her to sacrifice? Her traditions? Her community? The answer is found along the wooded paths.

When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

It began when I met Cindy Martinusen Coloma in church, 20 years ago. Cindy was also a young mom. We got to know each other, and Cindy told me about her dream to write. Something struck a chord in me. I had grown up loving to read, but I never considered writing. We encouraged each other. We attended our first writer's conference in 1994 at Mt. Hermon in Northern California. I was 22-years-old and pregnant with my third child at that first conference. Being at that conference I knew that's what I wanted to do!

Through the years, Cindy and I have encouraged each other, and God has led us down amazing paths. Cindy also has many novels published now: www.cindycoloma.com

What genre do you most like to write?

I love writing historical fiction, but I'll qualify that...because I also love writing Amish fiction. Maybe because it feels “historical” to me. The Amish have been able to keep the traditions of their ancestors—traditions and a lifestyle that many of us have lost in our technology-filled busy lives.

You're not the only one...Amish fiction feels historical to me, too.  :o)

Do your own personal experiences, or those of family and friends, ever find their way into one your stories? If it’s not too personal, do you have a funny one you can share with us?

Yes! Every book has personal stories woven into it. One of my novels, Beside Still Waters is inspired by the Eash family who moved from Indiana to Montana to be part of an Amish community there. When I signed the contract to write the story I had NO IDEA our family would soon be moving from Kalispell, Montana to Little Rock, Arkansas. I never thought I'd find myself living in the South, but I had to admit I REALLY enjoy it!

In another novel Along Wooded Paths, Marianna builds friendships with people very different than herself. As I wrote that novel, I was making friends with “Southerners”--some of whom were very different than me, and it the process I met some amazing people. I'm learning that most things that enter my life end up in one of my novels.

One funny story involves my husband. He loves making up sayings, and his favorite is, “A wet tick in a watermelon patch.” He uses it ALL the time! For example, “I'm happier than a wet tick in a watermelon patch,” or “I'm fuller than a wet tick in a watermelon patch,” even “I'm more tired than a wet tick in a watermelon patch.” It doesn't really make sense, and I think that's the point. The fun thing is that I included the phrase in one of my novels! (Send me a note through my website if you find it! LOL.)

His phrase reminds me of another one I've heard quite often (down South, mostly), "I'm as full as a tick on a hound dog's ear!"

What do you hope readers “take away” with them after they read one of your books?

I hope they put down my book inspired. I hope they see God in new ways. I hope they understand better how God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways!

What is your latest book release?

My newest novel is the second book in my Big Sky Series, Along Wooded Paths. Book #3 is Beyond Hope's Valley and it'll be out April 2012!

Are you currently working on another novel, and if so, can you give us a snippet about it?

Yes, I'm currently working on Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska. I'm co-writing it with my friend Ocieanna Fleiss and we just traveled up there last month for research! This is the snippet so far, but since it's still a work-in-progress, things might change.

Ginny Marshall is on the verge of having her dreams realized. She's one signature away from signing a major recording contract and she's peaked the interest of Danny Kingston, her agent and one of the most influential men in pop music. Yet something deep inside tells her not to sign. Knowing she needs someone to talk to—someone who'd be interested in her best interest and not just in her notoriety, she travels to Glacier Bay, Alaska to find her ex-fiance Brett Miller.
As soon as Ginny is shuttled into Glacier Bay she has a good feeling about coming. The tidewater glaciers, snow-capped mountain ranges, ocean coastlines, deep fjords, and freshwater rivers and lakes reconnect her with God in a way she hadn't experienced in a while. She finds her way to the address Brett had given her, but discovers he isn't home. A neighbor gives Ginny directions to Brett's grandmother's cabin, surely Granny M. will know where he is.

Granny M. welcomes Ginny with open arms. “So, you're the Ginny I've heard so much about.” Granny M. starts telling Ginny about some letters, when Ginny interrupts and asks where Brett is. Unfortunately he's on a week long kayaking trip with is father and brother. Ginny just missed him.

Staying with Granny M., Ginny reads the letters sent from Glacier Bay, Alaska Territory, 1929. The first letter is from a Mr. Claiborn Maibe asking his friend Rev. Hal Wakeland to choose a bride for him—someone of pleasing companionship and a fine moral conduct who will be a good mother to Clairborne's two children. Ginny is intrigued. Would a man honestly send for a wife and marry the woman who arrived ... without question?

Through the letters—and the new friends she meets at Glacier Bay—Ginny remembers what a relationship with God is all about. She also discovers what—and who—her heart desires most.

What was the last Christian Fiction book that you read that you couldn’t put down?

Good question! I've read a lot of good ones, but I couldn't SLEEP until I finished The Shape of Mercy by Susan Meissner.

Everybody and their momma is telling me what a great book this is!  Must see what all the fuss is about...and soon!

What is your most favorite thing about the South?

I've lived in Little Rock, Arkansas for 1 1/2 years and I love it. I love the personalities. People are so fun and everyone has such a great sense of humor, plus they strike up conversations if you make eye contact. I often find myself chatting with someone at Walmart for 10 minutes, and really enjoying myself. My husband and I met one couple at a yard sale and when we left John told me, “I feel like we've known them for years, not just fifteen minutes.”

Don't you just love that?  *smile*

Iced Tea—sweet or un-sweet?

Sweet please!

BBQ Pork or BBQ Beef?

Pork.

Dolly Parton or Elvis Presley?

Elvis, swoon.

Historical House—Plantation or Log Cabin?

Plantation.

Country gal or city gal?

I like to live close to the city but look out my window at the country.

You, you all, or y’all?

It was you all, but if I'm out and about in Little Rock it's slipping into y'all.

That's okay.  You're Southern now, and people might start to look at you funny if you didn't say "y'all!"

Book Review: Desired: The Untold Story of Samson and Delilah by Ginger Garrett/5 Stars

About the book:

Meet the legendary Samson as you've never known him before … through the eyes of the three women who loved him.

Before Samson was an Old Testament legend, he was a prodigal son, an inexperienced suitor, a vengeful husband, and a lost soul driven by his own weakness. This is his story as told by three strong women who loved him—the nagging, manipulative mother who pushed him toward greatness, the hapless Philistine bride whose betrayal propelled him into notoriety, and the emotionally damaged seductress—the famous Delilah—who engineered his downfall and propelled him to his destiny. Desired celebrates the God of Israel's to work powerfully in the midst of hopes, fears, desires, and sorrows.

My thoughts:

Ginger Garrett is a masterful storyteller.  Through vivid descriptions and accurate research, she sweeps the reader away on a trip to the ancient city of Timnah during Philistine rule.  The wine is plenty, the idol worship is rampant, yet love is still sought in this heathen land.  It is here that the Hebrew, Samson, meets his Philistine wife, Amara, and where she becomes the first woman to betray him.

But she will not be the only women to claim such a title.  Delilah, who most have always associated with a seductive nature, begs and pleads for Samson to share his secret with her.  Through several tests, we know that he does indeed share this well-kept secret, and it leads to his demise.

For those readers familiar with this tale from Judges, do not be convinced yet that you know the whole story of Samson.  Garrett has a few surprises up her sleeve.  This dramatic Biblical story will have you burning the midnight oil, and will also have you reaching for your Bible to compare both stories when you are finished.
