Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by TheBermudaOnion where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun....just click on the link at the beginning of this paragraph. I've been away from this meme for a couple of weeks, and I am so glad to be participating in it again. I wish I had more than 3 words, though...I can't seem to find the list of words that I'd been accumulating. :o(
fichu - n.
a woman's kerchief or shawl, generally triangular in shape, worn draped over the shoulders or around the neck with the ends drawn together on the breast.
surtout - n.
a man's close-fitting overcoat, esp. a frock coat.
fascinator - n.
a scarf of crochet work, lace, or the like, narrowing toward the ends, worn as a head covering by women.
(How very odd that all my words seem to be related to clothing!)
Those are great words! I almost wish I had a fascinator just so I'd have an excuse to throw that word around - I love it!
ReplyDeleteI saw surtout used somewhere else this week...now if I could just remember where...
ReplyDeleteMy words are here.
Fichu I knew but the other two are new to me. Surtout means especially in French, so I was surprised to see it on your list. It also literally means over all, so its meaning in English makes sense. I'm fascinated by fascinator though; what a weird word for a piece of clothing!
ReplyDeleteAll three were new to me. They seem so easy too. You must be reading something about fashion.
ReplyDeleteActually, Margot...I think all the words came from a book that I've been reading off and on by L.M. Montgomery. I always find new (to me) words in her books!
